How often do I need to visit the dentist?
Since each patient is unique, they will need to be assessed on an individual basis to determine the appropriate time interval for dental visits. After a comprehensive exam, your dentist and hygienist will determine the health of your gums. Depending on their level of health, a specific cleaning interval will be established.
Patients with healthy gums will usually be seen every six months for cleanings and checkups. Consistent visits to your dentist will help detect the early stages of any concerns such as oral cancer, gum disease, or tooth decay. This gives you the opportunity for less invasive and more successful treatment procedures, and these visits are truly your first line of defense against these conditions.
Patients with periodontal disease will initially require a deep cleaning to remove the plaque and tartar causing the infection in their gums and bone. We may also recommend antibiotic therapy to help control the infection and surgery for more advanced cases of gum disease, known as periodontitis. Once your gum disease is successfully being controlled, three-month cleaning intervals are required to maintain periodontal health.
