Dental Crown An Overview

3 things you need to know about dental crownsA dental crown is a tooth-shaped cap that we use quite often at our Cary, NC dentist office. Their purpose is to add strength and protect your natural teeth, improving their function and overall esthetics. A crown also keeps your natural root intact and protected. The tooth crown covers the entire tooth, like a cap, and is permanently cemented into place. Crowns are stain and decay resistant and can last for many years. They can also be color matched to blend seamlessly with your smile for beautiful results. A dental crown can serve both restorative and cosmetic purposes and can address many common dental concerns including:

  • Protect a weak tooth from breaking
  • Aid in attaching a dental bridge
  • Fix a broken or cracked tooth
  • Cover badly discolored tooth
  • Cover badly shaped tooth
  • As a replacement tooth, supported by a dental implant
  • Protect a tooth after root canal therapy
  • Close gaps between teeth

Dental Crown What to Expect

Dental Crown Process

Planning Phase
Dr. Leo or Dr. Alex will conduct a comprehensive examination of your teeth, mouth and gums. Then a personalized treatment plan will be created that will restore the tooth to optimal health and function with a dental crown. Our dentists have been using CEREC technology for over 13 years to deliver high quality crowns in only one short appointment in our Cary, NC dentist office.

Tooth Preparation and Crown Creation
Once the treatment plan is finalized, Dr. Leo or Dr. Alex will prepare the tooth/teeth by removing a small amount of the natural tooth structure to accommodate the dental crown. Digital images of the prepared tooth will be taken and used to create a digital 3-D model of the new dental crown. We will then use our on-site milling machine to fabricate a comfortable, beautiful and natural functioning dental crown using those images.

Final Restoration
When your crown is ready to be placed, Dr. Leo or Dr. Alex will attach the dental crown, make any necessary adjustments and bonded it to the tooth then polish it. In a single one to two hour visit with our dentists in Cary, North Carolina, you will leave with a new tooth.
